This production of Tannhäuser premiered in July 2019 and presented the long awaited Bayreuth debut of star conductor Valery Gergiev, as well as the house debut of young soprano star Lise Davidsen.

Tobias Kratzer’s staging presented Tannhäuser as a wildly contemporary parable of art and freedom which was praised as “novel” and “wrenching” (New York Times) and received exceptional press acclaim. Lise Davidsen’s “beautifully lyrical” Elisabeth was as much acclaimed as heldentenor Stephen Gould’s Tannhäuser, who exhibited “great dramatic and vocal power in the title role” (Telegraph). They were joined by mezzo soprano Elena Zhidkova’s Venus (“scene stealing,” according to Opera Today), baritone Markus Eiche’s Wolfram and Stephen Milling’s Landgraf.

History

Tannhauser

World premiere: Court Opera, Dresden, 1845. Premiere of revised version: Opéra, Paris, 1861.

History, myth, and invention come together in Tannhäuser to create a unique and powerful drama. The title character was a real 13th-century Minnesinger who inspired a legend that Wagner used as the basis for the opera. He notably added the character of Elisabeth, based on the historical Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, wife of the Landgrave of Thuringia. The opera’s score went through several revisions after the original performances, most importantly when Wagner added the Venusberg ballet for the 1861 French premiere.
