Giuseppe Verdi was well on the way towards renown and prosperity when he took up the story of Violetta, a famed courtesan whose intensely romantic and colorful but tragically brief life marked the emergence of realism into Italian opera. Verdi and Alexandre Dumas intended this melodrama to have a contemporary setting, and David Livermore’s stunning production maintains this wish by placing his elegant and powerful cast firmly in the 20th century. This alchemy of masterful acting, vivid bel canto voices and the vitality of Zubin Mehta’s conducting results in a triumphant and unforgettably poignant operatic experience.
History
La Traviata
Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata (The Fallen Woman) is a three-act opera based on “La Dame aux Camelias”, adapted from the novel by
Alexandre Dumas. The play is still staged today in its original form.
Originally titled, Violetta after the main character, La Traviata is one of the composer’s most frequently performed operas.
The story is of Violetta, a beautiful courtesan of Paris, Alfredo, her handsome, yet penniless lover and Alfredo’s father, Germont, who destroys their love.
The Met’s 2018–19 production of Verdi's heartbreaking classic featured a decadent 18th-century Paris played out against a stunning backdrop that changed with the seasons and the nature of Violetta and Alfredo's doomed, but exquisitely beautiful romance.
La Traviata made its world premiere in Venice at the Teatro la Fenice, on March 6, 1853.
