Renée Fleming, as the ill-fated Violetta, leads The Royal Opera’s stellar cast opposite Joseph Calleja as Alfredo, with Thomas Hampson as his unyielding father. Richard Eyre’s classic production brings one of Verdi’s best-loved works vividly to life, with stage designs that evoke the pleasure-seeking whirl of Parisian society – the glamorous setting for the doomed love of Alfredo and Violetta. Antonio Pappano draws from Verdi’s score the full force of dramatic and melodic intensity that have made it one of the most enduring works of all opera.

History

La Traviata

Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata (The Fallen Woman) is a three-act opera based on “La Dame aux Camelias”, adapted from the novel by
Alexandre Dumas. The play is still staged today in its original form.

Originally titled, Violetta after the main character, La Traviata is one of the composer’s most frequently performed operas.

The story is of Violetta, a beautiful courtesan of Paris, Alfredo, her handsome, yet penniless lover and Alfredo’s father, Germont, who destroys their love.

The Met’s 2018–19 production of Verdi's heartbreaking classic featured a decadent 18th-century Paris played out against a stunning backdrop that changed with the seasons and the nature of Violetta and Alfredo's doomed, but exquisitely beautiful romance.

La Traviata made its world premiere in Venice at the Teatro la Fenice, on March 6, 1853.
