Falstaff is Verdi’s masterpiece of comic opera, in which the behavior of the aging Sir John Falstaff, a devious freeloader and would-be ladykiller, causes uproar in the petty-bourgeois household of the Windsors.

In this production, stage and film director Mario Martone updates the action to the present day and shows Falstaff as an aging rebel in dodgy sideburns and leather jacket. Among the “exquisite vocal cast” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), Michael Volle gives his debut in the title role “with masterly dynamic shadings” (Financial Times) and “as if he had been preparing for this role for a lifetime” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), while “Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin are tickling out all the wit and all the momentum from this score” (Online Merker).

History

Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff

Verdi's final opera, and the third of his stage works to be based on a Shakespeare play, premiered at Milan’s La Scala in 1893, a triumphal success for the almost 80-year-old composer. Baritone Victor Maurel, who sang the title role, reprised his performance in the opera’s U.S. premiere at the Met two years later. In the 2013–14 season, Music Director James Levine conducts a new production directed by Robert Carsen, the first new Met Falstaff since 1964.
