Russian soprano Olga Mykytenko and the astonishing tenor Piotr Beczala give riveting performances as Iolanta and the noble knight. This is a reissue of the critically acclaimed former release, originally recorded live on March 13, 2002.

History

Iolanta

Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta is a one-act lyric opera sung in Russian.

It was originally commissioned as part of a program with a new ballet at the time, which became The Nutcracker.

Although the work has been relatively unknown outside of Russia since its 1892 premiere, it is prime operatic Tchaikovsky— overflowing with a wealth of lush melody. It is his last composition.

Set in the mountains of southern France in the 15th century, the story is about the blind Princess Iolanta and her father, King René, who forbids anyone to talk of beauty, light or the natural world hoping that she will not recognize her affliction.

Iolanta was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 2015 with Anna Netrebko in the title role and was paired with Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle in the Met’s 2018–19 season.

Iolanta made its world premiere in St. Petersburg’s, Marinsky Theatre, December 18,1892.
