Speaking of Wagner: Talking to Audiences About The Ring of the Nibelung (Paperback)
by William Berger
Speaking of Wagner compiles – in a new and highly accessible format – celebrated author, lecturer, and Metropolitan Opera commentator William Berger’s collection of talks and presentations about Richard Wagner, the most controversial, and perhaps the most widely influential, artist in history.
These talks have been successful with diverse audiences, ranging from newcomers to the most exacting experts, often at the same time. Berger’s book preserves that wide range of tone: erudite but engaging, from lofty to startlingly coarse, connecting the subject to references from mythology to psychology and even to cutting-edge pop culture.
“With a joyful and disarming style, deep and nuanced knowledge, and an irresistible knack for storytelling, Will Berger finally unlocked Wagner’s most complex work for me! The way he’s able to draw us in and render such dense material addictive serves as a perfect model for the ways in which opera is for everyone!” -- Anthony Roth Costanzo

History
Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen
Conceived and written over a period of more than 25 years, Wagner’s Ring cycle is an epic musical journey of four operas: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung. Its story of gods, dwarves, and men and the quest for an all-powerful ring was inspired by many sources, including 13th-century Icelandic writings and the medieval German Nibelungenlied. The complete cycle was first seen at the inaugural Bayreuth Festival in 1876. The Met’s landmark production, directed by Robert Lepage, premiered over the course of the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons. The DVD release of its Live in HD presentation won the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording.
