Turandot, a late gem of Italian opera, is a celebration of the sounds and the mythical figures intimately associated with Chinese legend. The dramatic punch of the libretto inspired Giacomo Puccini to imagine a sound world of unusual splendor. The score is unique to Italian opera, featuring original Chinese melodies, pentatonic scales, and orchestration with percussion writing that is strongly reminiscent of traditional Chinese music.

The NCPA’s production of this popular opera is a compelling feast for the senses. Chinese composer Hao Weiya gave this Turandot a new finale, performed for the first time in Beijing. In this captivating staging by director Chen Xinyi and under the musical direction of Daniel Oren, an excellent cast offers a unique musical experience.

World premiere: Teatro alla Scala, Milan, 1926.

Puccini’s final opera is an epic fairy tale set in a China of legend, loosely based on a play by 18th-century Italian dramatist Carlo Gozzi.

Featuring a most unusual score with an astounding and innovative use of chorus and orchestra, it is still recognizably Puccini, bursting with instantly appealing melody. The unenviable task of completing the opera’s final scene upon Puccini’s sudden death was left to the composer Franco Alfano. Conductor Arturo Toscanini oversaw Alfano’s contribution and led the world premiere.
