Luciano Pavarotti’s Cavaradossi in Tosca was his most celebrated role at the Met. It was captured for posterity in Tito Gobbi’s famous production in 1978, with a luminous Shirley Verrett in the title role and the tenor in his glorious prime. The stellar cast also includes Cornell MacNeil and Fernando Corena.
This disc also includes bonus materials such as behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage and interviews with the director, conductor and cast.
History
Tosca premiered in 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. It is one of the world’s most frequently performed operas and is known as much for its gripping drama as for its appealing score. The setting is Rome, where Tosca, a beautiful and famous singer, battles to save her lover Mario from the sadistic police chief Scarpia. The role of Tosca has been long considered a proving ground for great operatic actresses.
