Tosca has been an audience favorite from the onset. Premiered in 1900, it marks the beginning of 20th century opera, in which sex, violence and the uncanny abyss of the human psyche would be explored, inspiring composers to expand the musical means of expression in all thinkable ways.

Even unto today, Tosca has lost little of its expressive power, and the symphonic qualities of Puccini’s intricate score are fully brought out by the inspired playing of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, led by the seasoned maestro Carlo Montanaro. Melody Moore, Stefan Pop, and Lester Lynch bring the passionate, electrifying score to life with performances of dazzling power, along with a splendid cast.

History

Tosca premiered in 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. It is one of the world’s most frequently performed operas and is known as much for its gripping drama as for its appealing score. The setting is Rome, where Tosca, a beautiful and famous singer, battles to save her lover Mario from the sadistic police chief Scarpia. The role of Tosca has been long considered a proving ground for great operatic actresses.
