The dark, dangerous drama of Il tabarro…the heart-wrenching pathos of Suor Angelica…the merciless comedy (leavened with youthful romance) of Gianni Schicchi…Puccini’s scores for his triptych of one-act operas are as compelling for their subtlety as for their theatrical flair. Conducted with mastery by Sir Antonio Pappano, Il trittico is peopled by a magnificent cast that includes Angela Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna, José van Dam, Cristina Gallardo-Domâs, Maria Guleghina and Neil Shicoff.

History

Il Trittico

Il Trittico (TheTriptych ) is the title of a collection of three one-act operas—  ll tabarro, Suor angelica and Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini. Each deals with the concealment of a death.

ll tabarro, set on a barge on the Seine in Paris around 1910 is a dark and brooding piece full of the violence and grit associated with verismo opera.

Suor angelica, Puccini's personal favorite, takes place at a convent near Siena in the latter part of the 17th century. It is an uplifting tale of religious redemption.

Gianni Schicchi, the third and most popular opera of the three is a farce full of greed and conniving set in Florence in 1299.

Il Trittico received its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera on December 14, 1918. On April 20, 2007, a critically acclaimed production opened at the Met. The 2018/2019 season marked the centennial of the work’s world premiere at the Met.
