History
The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess
One of America’s favorite operas returns to the Met for the first time in nearly 30 years. James Robinson’s stylish production transports audiences to Catfish Row on the Charleston waterfront, vibrant with the music, dancing, emotion, and heartbreak of its inhabitants.
“If you’re going to stage Gershwin’s opera, this is how,” raved the Guardian when the new production premiered in London in 2018.
David Robertson conducts a dynamic cast, featuring the sympathetic duo of Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the title roles and an all-star ensemble that includes Golda Schultz, Latonia Moore, Denyce Graves, Frederick Ballentine, Alfred Walker, and Ryan Speedo Green.

My father performed in the original stage production and Hollywood version with Sammy Davis Jr. The Mets production is fantastic. I am taking twenty middle and high school students to view as part of ourstudy fof Black History Month.
caroloboe, February 2020I saw the performance live on October 5 and took my 2nd mother to see it at the movies on February 1. I am a little biased, I have loved this piece and Gershwin's music since I was a child. While everyone is wonderful I was especially impressed by Angel Blue as Bess. I never got to see Audra McDonald as Bess but Angel Blue has a beautiful voice, is beautiful, and has a presence on stage. a treat is that the host for the HD broadcast is Audra McDonald, one of America's treasures.
