A classic story of love under the microscope is given a contemporary perspective in this performance of Mozart’s “School for Lovers.” Così fan tutte is a compassionate examination of young love, full of wit and wonderful music, which ensure its lasting popularity. The opera was Mozart’s final collaboration with the Italian librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, and Jonathan Miller’s production, created for The Royal Opera and a staple of their repertory for nearly 20 years, brings out the timelessness of this exploration of the human condition.

History

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così fan tutte

Mozart’s third and final collaboration with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte premiered in 1790. For much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, this comedy about testing the ties of young love was rarely seen on stage, its plot being considered “immoral.” Today it is among the most beloved operas in the repertoire.
