Molto Agitato: The Mayhem Behind the Music at the Metropolitan Opera
By Johanna Fiedler
Johanna Fiedler, daughter of Arthur Fiedler, the long-time conductor of the Boston Pops, weaves together some of the most memorable personal, economic, and artistic struggles of the Met's long and vibrant history. From the opera house's early days as a home to legends like Toscanini, Mahler, and Caruso, to more recent artists like Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and Kathleen Battle, she takes readers behind the gold curtain to reveal electrifying performers, and unforgettable personalities.

“A great pleasure to read. Simultaneously thoughtful, well-written and trashy . . . an ideal beach read for opera buffs.” —Time Out New York
“Opera buffs looking for a chatty, informative and basically fair take on the Met will enjoy the book.” —The New York Times Book Review

I love books about opera, and I was drawn to this book's clever title. The author writes in a light-hearted style, but she does convey the complex challenges of producing the operas we love.
