George Frideric Handel’s opera Admeto was composed for the Royal Academy of Music. The work, with Italian libretto by Nicola Hyam, premiered in 1727 and is partly based on Euripides’ Alcestis. For this production, Academy Award-nominated film director Doris Dörrie returns to her beloved subject of Japan, and one of Handel’s most popular operas receives a stunning transformation into the ritualized world of the samurai.
