Made of handwoven, iridescent Thai silk that is fashioned from yards of shirred fabric, this practical and elegant vest is one of Richard Tsao’s most enduring designs.
The classic vest, which can be worn open or closed, features multi-colored, fabric covered buttons, and a stand-up collar with eggplant on the outside and a contrasting turquoise inside. The bright colors in Tsao’s cocoon vests and jackets are reminiscent of the striking costumes created for the Met’s exquisite production of Madama Butterfly.

History
Puccini’s original version of Madama Butterfly premiered at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in 1904. The composer was inspired to write an opera about a tragic love between a young Japanese geisha and an American Navy officer after seeing David Belasco’s play by the same name performed in London in June 1900. Puccini’s score includes many Japanese folk melodies, and is one of his most sweeping and sophisticated. It remains one of the world’s most popular operas.
