At the Salzburg Festival in 2014, the legendary Harry Kupfer staged this un–abbreviated version of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose).

Richard Strauss was enamored with the female voice and nowhere is it more prolific than in this work famed for the beautiful music of the three soprano roles: the aristocratic Marschallin; Sophie von Faninal, daughter of a rich bourgeois and chaperone, Marianne.

Under the baton of world-renowned conductor, Franz Welser-Möst, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs magnificently in tandem with a notable cast, including popular sopranos, Mojca Erdman, Krassimira Stoyanova and Sophie Koch as well as Austrian bass, Günther Groisböck and baritone, Adrian Eröd.

History

Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier

Strauss and Hofmannsthal’s bittersweet comedy, first staged in 1911, masterfully combines humor (of both the sophisticated and the slapstick kind) with genuine emotion and human drama. The ravishing final trio of the three leading female voices is among the most celebrated pieces in the operatic repertoire.
