History

Adriana Lecouvreur

Composed in the mid-19th-century, Francesco Cilea’s four-act opera, Adriana Lecouvreur is about the real-life French actress, who dazzled 18th-century audiences in Paris with her on and offstage passion.

Set backstage at the Opéra-Comique in Paris around 1730, the plot revolves around Adriana, her lover, the legendary soldier, Maurizio and her rival, Mademoiselle Duclos, all caught in a web of love, jealousy and deception.

Central to the narrative is a bouquet of violets, which represents Adriana’s pledge of love to Maurizio and her death in the end when she holds the poisoned flowers to her face. Maurizio laments her demise in
“Ecco La Luce” as she dies in his arms.

Adriana Lecouvreur premiered at the Teatro Lirico, Milan, 1902.
