“A deeply moving performance...one of those nights when it was a privilege to be at the Met.” That’s how the New York Times described the company’s 2001 revival of Berg’s Wozzeck, conducted by James Levine and captured in this extraordinary telecast. Falk Struckmann stars in the towering title role of the disturbed, mistreated soldier, opposite Katarina Dalayman as Marie.
History
Alban Berg’s Wozzeck
Berg’s landmark work, based on Georg Büchner’s unfinished play, changed the operatic landscape when it premiered in Berlin in 1925. A searing portrayal of an oppressed individual in a hostile society, set to an atonal score, it has remained as relevant and contemporary ever since.

I could not be more excited to see one of my all-time favorite operas conducted by Maestro Levine next season! This DVD from the fall of 2001 is simply stunning. Maestro Levine and the Met orchestra make exciting theater out of Bergs complex score, and Struckmans performance is an unforgettable record of stellar vocalism and drama. Graham Clark as the Captain also shines, unrivaled by anyone else in the role in my book. Should you have this wonderful gem – ‘Jawohl, Herr Hauptmann!’
