Martin Wahlberg and his Orkester Nord complete their recording series dedicated to French opéra-comique with Die Zauberflöte. Surprising, yes, but research has shown that Mozart’s masterpiece is directly descended from the French tradition and from an initiation tale of the Enlightenment.

In this version, which includes all the dialogue, a cast similar to that of the premiere (with Ruth Williams, a 16-year-old Pamina who gives a unique color to the vocal ensemble), and previously unpublished fragments (the fantasy for flute in The Trial of Silence), the Norwegian conductor proves that it is still possible to surprise with one of the best-known stage works in existence, and allows us to take a fresh look at this timeless, monumental opera and the eternal reflections it raises.

History

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte)

Mozart’s final opera (written before La Clemenza di Tito but first performed later) premiered in Vienna in September 1791, just weeks before the composer’s death, with Mozart conducting the orchestra from the fortepiano. A timeless fairy tale, it was a major success from the beginning and never lost its place as one of the most popular works in the repertoire. Julie Taymor’s beloved Met production opened in 2004. Its abridged English-language version, which returns in December 2013 as the company’s annual holiday presentation for families, inaugurated the Met’s Live in HD series of performance transmissions to movie theaters around the world in 2006.
