Release Date: March 1, 2025

There was a flurry of firsts on the opening night of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia’s 2024/25 season. Not only was this Daniel Harding’s debut appearance in his new role as the orchestra’s Musical Director, but he and the Santa Cecilia forces were performing Puccini’s operatic thriller Tosca for the very first time.

With an all-star cast on board, led by star tenor Jonathan Tetelman and soprano Eleonora Buratto as ill-fated lovers, their presentation of Puccini’s Tosca made a fitting tribute to the composer. They were joined by French baritone Ludovic Tézier, who sings Baron Scarpia. These experienced performers conjured the drama of an opera as a concert performance that highlights the slightest vocal and orchestral nuance – every detail of Puccini’s fantastic writing can be heard.

History

Tosca premiered in 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. It is one of the world’s most frequently performed operas and is known as much for its gripping drama as for its appealing score. The setting is Rome, where Tosca, a beautiful and famous singer, battles to save her lover Mario from the sadistic police chief Scarpia. The role of Tosca has been long considered a proving ground for great operatic actresses.
