The Independent` says that `Rossini`s final opera is infrequently recorded, and it`s unlikely anyone will try again soon -- why risk comparison with Pappano`s magisterial presentation, the latest in a string of triumphs for the maestro?

There`s so much to enjoy about `William Tell,` and Pappano unerringly brings it all out: the story`s ingenious entwining of romance and revolution and the great range of choral parts, from Austrian soldiers to Swiss women, huntsmen to shepherds, which more than compensates for the relative infrequency of truly great arias. Malin Bystrom excels in Mathilde`s lonely `Sombre Foret,` while Gerald Finley captures Tell`s nobility perfectly in `Sois Immobile.` Superb.`

As well, John Osborn makes a solid Arnold. `The Financial Times` states that `Osborn sailed through the stratospheric reaches of Arnold’s tenor heights with sweetly lyrical roundness.` Furthermore, they found Malin Bystrom, whom Pappano called `one of the few [sopranos] who can cope with the extreme lyrical and dramatic demands – and coloratura – of the part` to be a `a sublimely elegant Matilde.`

And, overall they stated that `The orchestra is fleet and wonderfully together, with crunch, buoyancy, a keen sense of collective phrasing, and its own very distinctive sound. An excellent cast, led by Gerald Finley, on magnificent form in the title role, brought drama and momentum. Pappano…kept tension high. His singers brought meaning to every phrase, giving us driven, motivated vocal lines.` This is clearly an album which belongs in the collection of everyone interested in this opera!

Guillaume Tell

Rossini’s epic telling of the William Tell fable returns to the Met stage after an absence of more than 80 years, in a new production by Pierre Audi. Gerald Finley sings one of his signature roles as Tell, the revolutionary on a quest for freedom. Marina Rebeka is Mathilde and Bryan Hymel is her suitor, Arnold. Fabio Luisi conducts Rossini’s final, crowning operatic achievement.
