In their original form, Peter Bassett’s Ring talks were first given at the Elder Conservatorium of the University of Adelaide, Australia, in November and December 1998, as pre-performance lectures for three cycles of The Ring in Adelaide, South Australia. In revised form they were given again in 2004, at the Grainger Studio of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for three cycles of a new production of The Ring. They formed the basis of the books A Ring for the Millennium and The Nibelung’s Ring.

The talks were subsequently recorded for Universal Music Australia in 2012. They are accompanied here by a 42-page booklet of essays on The Ring, featuring musical illustrations.

“Bassett’s great gift, apart from his encyclopedic knowledge of The Ring, is his ability to make the seemingly complex approachable, to explain in the most straightforward way what the Ring story is all about. This is just the thing – and not only for those who are intimidated. Even the most enthusiastic and informed of Ring followers will find fascinating facts, perhaps even revelations, on this operatic journey of discovery in the company of Bassett, Solti, singers (some legendary) and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.” - Neville Cohn, OZartsreview

“A really fine preparation for Ring-goers or listeners, but much more, it has excellent notes and essays.” - Barney Zwartz, The Age/Sydney Morning Herald

History

Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen

Conceived and written over a period of more than 25 years, Wagner’s Ring cycle is an epic musical journey of four operas: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung. Its story of gods, dwarves, and men and the quest for an all-powerful ring was inspired by many sources, including 13th-century Icelandic writings and the medieval German Nibelungenlied. The complete cycle was first seen at the inaugural Bayreuth Festival in 1876. The Met’s landmark production, directed by Robert Lepage, premiered over the course of the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons. The DVD release of its Live in HD presentation won the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording.
