Description

Viola Patent Print

This handsome print of a viola is a unique piece of art based on a patent archived in the United States Patent Office.

To create his work, the artist has used photographic images, legally worded descriptions and his own renderings.

Portrayed here is the copyrighted record of an invention — a carbon fiber viola— designed by Luis Leguia, a cellist for the Boston Symphony. Carbon fiber, Leguia found, gives strength and durability to the instrument, allowing it to be played outdoors — a situation, which would normally be damaging to the traditional viola.

This piece is part of a collection featuring patents particular to iconic musical instruments, many of which are played by the Met Orchestra.

  • 8” x 10” print
  • The watermark seen in the product image will not appear on the purchased piece.

History

Music Notes

Most Western music is based on a system of notation that evolved around 1600 out of earlier practices. The starting point for any opera is the full score, which contains all individual voices and instruments arranged in a specific order on the page. The written music—representing the sounds a composer creates in his head—then comes to life performed by singers onstage and played by the orchestra.
