Opera News - December 26, 1959
Volume 24, Number 8
Published by the Metropolitan Opera Guild

Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier is the focus of this vintage 1959 issue of Opera News. The baroque statuary on the cover, a detail of the Neptune Fountain of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, is in keeping with the spirit of the Rosenkavalier score.

Each of these vintage Opera News magazines measures 7” wide and 10” tall and is roughly 32-36 pages in length. Lovingly preserved, each is a fascinating time capsule of what was happening at the Met Opera during its publication. They include interesting opera analysis, multiple black and white photos, and charming ads from the era. However, with the gorgeous covers you may just want to frame it to use as unique opera decor!

Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier

Strauss and Hofmannsthal’s bittersweet comedy, first staged in 1911, masterfully combines humor (of both the sophisticated and the slapstick kind) with genuine emotion and human drama. The ravishing final trio of the three leading female voices is among the most celebrated pieces in the operatic repertoire.
