Opera News - December 12, 1959
Volume 24, Number 6
Published by the Metropolitan Opera Guild

This vintage 1959 issue of Opera News has a focus on Massenet’s Manon, celebrating its first Met broadcast in five years. The cover features a reproduction from a steel engraving from the time of France under Louis XV.

Each of these vintage Opera News magazines measures 7” wide and 10” tall and is roughly 32-36 pages in length. Lovingly preserved, each is a fascinating time capsule of what was happening at the Met Opera during its publication. They include interesting opera analysis, multiple black and white photos, and charming ads from the era. However, with the gorgeous covers you may just want to frame it to use as unique opera decor!

History

Massenet’s most popular work, based on Abbe Prévost’s novel Manon Lescaut, premiered at Paris’s Opéra-Comique in 1884. Laurent Pelly, who created the Met’s new production of the opera, says: “Manon is an adventure that amuses, moves, and frightens us. The title character is lively, free, young, and feckless—and she manipulates all the men around her purely for her own pleasure. Anna Netrebko is remarkable in the part—she has sex appeal, a bewitching voice, and she is an extraordinary actress.”
