Re-release of a previous Orfeo bestseller, this album contains the premiere of the new production of Don Carlo from October 1970 in Vienna. The premiere was surrounded by a great scandal, caused by fans of Herbert von Karajan’s fans, who expected their idol to conduct the new production. However, Karajan entrusted the conductor Horst Stein with the new production, and though Stein had until then been the favorite of the local audience, this time he was greeted with a torrent of “boos” which were totally unrelated to his artistic performance. The singers, by contrast, were cheered to the rafters. The booklet offers detailed information about the scandal and indignation surrounding the premiere, together with archive photographs of the stage.
History
Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlo
Verdi’s longest and most ambitious opera is a powerful epic of love and politics set in France and Spain at the height of the Inquisition. The score combines intimate solos and ensembles with grand choral scenes, most notably the monumental auto-da-fé that ends Act III. Following its 1867 premiere in Paris (sung in French as Don Carlos), the composer revised the opera several times over a period of almost 20 years. Nicholas Hytner’s Met production, first seen in 2010, presents Don Carlo in its original five acts, sung in Italian.
