This striking black and white sinamay hat reflects the hats worn in the production of Massenet’s Manon on stage at the Met.
Measuring 14” wide x 5” high, it features a stunning sinamay bow and band, white brim and black top. One size fits most.
Sinamay is woven from the processed stalks of the abaca tree, a banana palm native to the Philippines. Abaca fiber is three times stronger than cotton or silk, and a fabric made from 100% abaca can last for over 100 years. As a result, sinamay holds a very firm shape. Because it is a natural fiber, it holds color beautifully.

Massenet’s most popular work, based on Abbe Prévost’s novel Manon Lescaut, premiered at Paris’s Opéra-Comique in 1884. Laurent Pelly, who created the Met’s new production of the opera, says: “Manon is an adventure that amuses, moves, and frightens us. The title character is lively, free, young, and feckless—and she manipulates all the men around her purely for her own pleasure. Anna Netrebko is remarkable in the part—she has sex appeal, a bewitching voice, and she is an extraordinary actress.”
