In 1965 − the year this recording was made − Callas gave her last complete performances at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera and the Paris Opéra.

This was her final complete recording of an opera and12 years after her first version of Tosca.

In the 1965 production, Callas was reunited with the Scarpia of  Tito Gobbi and Bergonzi as Cavaradossi.

“a thrilling and very complete interpretation, with scene after scene, bar after bar, brought to life by sheer intelligence and dramatic insight.”
− Gramophone

Tosca premiered in 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. It is one of the world’s most frequently performed operas and is known as much for its gripping drama as for its appealing score. The setting is Rome, where Tosca, a beautiful and famous singer, battles to save her lover Mario from the sadistic police chief Scarpia. The role of Tosca has been long considered a proving ground for great operatic actresses.
