This production of John Adams’s opera The Death of Klinghoffer, about the 1985 terrorist hijacking of the Achille Lauro ocean liner, features Janice Felty, Stephanie Friedman, and Thomas Hammons. Following its premiere, the New York Times wrote that this work “transmutes contemporary history into operatic poetry.”

“John Adams turns his cascading minimalism to the tragedy of the Achille Lauro… The Death of Klinghoffer is genuine tragedy - Greek chorus and all…This is one of the 20th century's best operas. A must.” - Amazon (Paul Cook)

John Adams’s The Death of Klinghoffer

In several of his operas, American composer John Adams has tackled matters of recent political history, including the creation of the atomic bomb and Richard Nixon’s visit to China. The Death of Klinghoffer was inspired by the events surrounding the hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruise ship in the Mediterranean in 1985. It was first seen in Brussels in 1991 and has its Met premiere in the 2014–15 season.
