Richard Strauss’s dazzling opera Der Rosenkavalier is set in 1740s Vienna. This opulent production by Oscar-winning film director John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy) marked the 25th anniversary of Sir Georg Solti’s spectacular debut at Covent Garden, conducting this very opera. It also features Kiri Te Kenawa’s first performance in London of the role of Marschallin, which “deserves to be ranked among her finest achievements” (International Herald Tribune).
“Rarely has this luscious, burnished score been realized with such emotional intensity or played with wuch glowing fervor.” (Daily Mail)
Barbara Bonney is “...an enchantingly vulnerable Sophie, as lovely to hear...as she is to behold.” (International Herald Tribune)
History
Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier
Strauss and Hofmannsthal’s bittersweet comedy, first staged in 1911, masterfully combines humor (of both the sophisticated and the slapstick kind) with genuine emotion and human drama. The ravishing final trio of the three leading female voices is among the most celebrated pieces in the operatic repertoire.
