Description
Sputnik Crystal Ornament with Small Facets (4” x 1.25”)
Our exquisite crystal ornament is hand-crafted from a vintage Swarovski crystal original to the Sputnik chandeliers given by the Austrian government to the Met upon its opening in 1966.
Historically significant icons of the Metropolitan Opera House, the chandeliers were conceived by Tad Lbeski of Harrison & Abramovitz specifically for the lobby and auditorium, then developed further and fabricated by Hans Harald Rath of J. L. Lobmeyr in Vienna.
Each dazzling round-cut crystal in this collection has small facets and measures 4” across and 1.25” thick with a 1” diameter center opening. A black ribbed ribbon, attached through the center for hanging, is subtly printed with architectural details of the Met’s famous golden gate.
This is a rare, one-of-a-kind, collectible piece from our exclusive collection. A gold-finished tag embossed with the Metropolitan Opera logo certifies that each crystal ornament is genuine.
This stunning crystal ornament can be admired during the holiday season and year-round as a memento of the Met.
We hand select each crystal to ensure it meets our standards for beauty, quality, and authenticity. As with any vintage piece, it may show natural wear from use over time.

History
Sputniks
The Metropolitan Opera’s starburst chandeliers have been a beloved fixture of the opera house at Lincoln Center since it opened in 1966. Dubbed “sputniks” after the Russian spacecraft, they reflect light brilliantly through clusters of Swarovski crystals.
