Rigoletto (2 CD)
Rigoletto is one of the greatest baritone roles and dominates Verdi’s opera which is based on Victor Hugo’s play Le roi s’amuse. Both opera and play rang foul of the censor and consequently the setting for the opera was removed to a fictional court in Mantua. Rigoletto is the court jester who is torn between public duty and his role as a clandestine father. The work contains some of the most famous arias in Italian opera as well as one of the greatest ensembles, the quartet in Act Three.
Renato Bruson (Rigoletto), Andrea Rost (Gilda), Roberto Alagna (Il Duca di Montova), Dimitri Kavrakos (Sparafucile), Mariana Pentcheva (Maddalena), Giorgio Giuseppini (Monterone), Antonella Trevisan (Giovanna), Silvestro Sammaritano (Marullo), Ernesto Gavazzi (Borsa), Antonio de Gobbi (Conte di Ceprano), Nicoletta Zanini (Contessa di Ceprano), Marilena Laurenza (Paggio)
Orchestra E Coro Del Teatro Alla Scala, Riccardo Muti
One of the most popular operas in the repertoire, Verdi’s riveting drama was first seen in 1851 at Venice’s Teatro La Fenice. Together with his next two works, Il Trovatore and La Traviata, it formed the basis for the composer’s lasting success. For his new production, director Michael Mayer has moved the action from 16th-century Mantua to 1960s Las Vegas: “I tried to imagine a recent world that captures the decadence of the Duke’s palace, where the participants are in pursuit of power, money, and beauty,” he says. Las Vegas in the ’60s is such a world, where a kind of prankster energy could go bad.”
