Richard Wagner Autograph Letter, Signed 1853

Famous German opera composer (1813-1883), together with Giuseppe Verdi, Wagner was the most famous creator and dominant figure in the genre for several decades of the 19th century.

Autograph letter signed, dated in Zurich in 1853. Wagner spent 9 years in exile in Zurich, as a guest of friends. While in Zurich, Wagner conducted concerts with his own music.

In this letter, he is arranging the presence of musicians from Germany, so they can participate in upcoming concerts under his baton. Letter includes the list of instrumentalists needed, is in German and an English translation is included.

Matted next to a photo postcard of the composer, from early 1900s.

Translation:

"I just learned that your musical ensemble will leave Silesia in early May and then return to Hechingen. If so, I would be very pleased if you would assure me at once that I might count on some help fro you.

In any event, you and your dear violin are very welcome. And besides that: 1 cello, 1 contrabass, 1 trumpeter (if he is very good) and similarly 1 good horn player, perhaps 2.

Is someone with you who plays the bass clarinet?

We would already be agreed on the terms.

My performances will be held on the 18th, 20th, and 22nd of May. The rehearsals begin on the evening of the 15th, when everyone should be here.

Please excuse my haste and send an agreeable answer soon."

Measures: 18.25" x 14.75"
