Description

Rafael Colón Hand Painted Violin (Madama Butterfly)

Inspired by the discipline and detailed work of Asian artists, Rafael Colón creates a hand etched and hand painted violin that pays tribute to the tragic tale of Madama Butterfly. Rafael’s unique artistic style boldly embraces the heart-wrenching emotion and glorious melodies of Puccini’s masterpiece.

Each beautifully painted, collectible violin is one of a kind. It is hand drawn, wood burned and hand painted on front and back by the artist in his NYC studio using oil, acrylic and marker paints. The violin comes with a bow, a case and a display stand and can be displayed on a shelf, piano or any flat surface.

Rafael Colón’s work is in the collection of the Queen of Sweden, The Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, the Tony Hawk Foundation and others. His art has been featured at El Museo del Barrio and at The Asia Society New York City.

History

Puccini’s original version of Madama Butterfly premiered at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in 1904. The composer was inspired to write an opera about a tragic love between a young Japanese geisha and an American Navy officer after seeing David Belasco’s play by the same name performed in London in June 1900. Puccini’s score includes many Japanese folk melodies, and is one of his most sweeping and sophisticated. It remains one of the world’s most popular operas.
