Description
Rafael Colón Hand Painted Skateboard (Madama Butterfly)
The artist Rafael Colón pays tribute to the Met’s production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Details from the opera are dramatically featured on this hand etched and hand painted skateboard.
This one-of-a-kind piece is the first opera-related skateboard Rafael has painted. It is hand drawn, wood burned, and hand painted on front and back by the artist in his NYC studio using oil, acrylic, and marker paints. There are small holes for hanging – we recommend using monofilament.
Rafael Colón’s work is in the collection of the Queen of Sweden, The Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, the Tony Hawk Foundation, and others. His art has been featured at El Museo del Barrio and at The Asia Society New York City.

History
Puccini’s original version of Madama Butterfly premiered at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in 1904. The composer was inspired to write an opera about a tragic love between a young Japanese geisha and an American Navy officer after seeing David Belasco’s play by the same name performed in London in June 1900. Puccini’s score includes many Japanese folk melodies, and is one of his most sweeping and sophisticated. It remains one of the world’s most popular operas.
