Over a century after Madama Butterfly’s premiere in 1904, Riccardo Chailly restores Puccini’s original two-act version of the beloved opera to the La Scala stage. “We all think we know this opera,” he writes, but this new version of the original score “offers continuous discoveries.”

This is the first ever video release of the 1904 two-act version of Madama Butterfly, featuring a new production by Alvis Hermanis and an all-star cast, including Bryan Hymel (Pinkerton) and Maria José Siri (Cio-Cio San).

“This was a performance endowed with abundant detail, an impressive depth of sound and a suppleness in lyrical passages that was nowhere more luxuriant than in the glittering evocation of a Nagasaki dawn. The unbroken Act II, later split in half by Puccini, hurtled inexorably towards Cio-Cio San’s demise.” (Financial Times)

History

Puccini’s original version of Madama Butterfly premiered at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in 1904. The composer was inspired to write an opera about a tragic love between a young Japanese geisha and an American Navy officer after seeing David Belasco’s play by the same name performed in London in June 1900. Puccini’s score includes many Japanese folk melodies, and is one of his most sweeping and sophisticated. It remains one of the world’s most popular operas.
