From The Penguin Guide:

“Sir Colin Davis has rarely directed a more sensitive or more warmly expressive performance on record than his account of Werther, based on a stage production at Covent Garden. Frederica von Stade makes an enchanting Charlotte, outshining all current rivals on record, both strong and tender, conveying the understanding but vulnerable character of Goethe’s heroine. Carreras... uses a naturally beautiful voice freshly and sensitively.... Thomas Allen as Charlotte’s husband Albert and Isobel Buchanan as Sophie, her sister, are excellent too. This is one of the very finest French opera sets.”

The complete libretto (offered in original language and translated into English, French, and German), is readable not only as PDF download but also via Amazon Kindle and iPad.

History

Jules Massenet's Werther

Massenet’s adaptation of Goethe’s landmark novel The Sorrows of Young Werther had its premiere in Vienna in 1892 in a German translation and was seen at Paris’s Opéra Comique the following year. The Met gave the first American performance on tour in Chicago in March 1894. Together with Manon and Thaïs, Werther remains the only of Massenet’s almost 40 operas to hold a permanent place in the repertoire. A new production, directed by Richard Eyre and starring Jonas Kaufmann and Sophie Koch, opens in the Met’s 2013–14 season.
