Jules Massenets five act opera-comique is presented on this new release by Patrick Davin and his Orchestra of the Opera Royal de Wallonie-Liege. Manon is Massenets most performed opera, which has maintained its spot in the repertoire since its composition. The enduring opera quickly conquered the worlds stages. Annick Massis stars in the title role. The French soprano has enjoyed a long stage career, frequently performing in Mozarts operas and many bel canto roles.
Massenet’s most popular work, based on Abbe Prévost’s novel Manon Lescaut, premiered at Paris’s Opéra-Comique in 1884. Laurent Pelly, who created the Met’s new production of the opera, says: “Manon is an adventure that amuses, moves, and frightens us. The title character is lively, free, young, and feckless—and she manipulates all the men around her purely for her own pleasure. Anna Netrebko is remarkable in the part—she has sex appeal, a bewitching voice, and she is an extraordinary actress.”
