Madama Butterfly Matted Poster
This poster was created for the 1904 world premiere of Italian composer Giacomo Puccini’s opera, Madama Butterfly. The reproduction is digitally printed on archival photographic paper, resulting in exceptional detail and vivid colors true to the turn-of-the-century original by designer Leopoldo Metlicovitz (1868-1944). It is matted in white for an overall size of 8” x 10”.
Considered in Italy to be one of the renovators of the poster, Metlicovitz was a painter, illustrator and lithographer specializing in the art nouveau style. In his position as Director of the Officine Grafiche at Casa Ricordi Printing in Milan, he created graphics for posters such as this one for the much-beloved Madama Butterfly.
The artist’s initials can be seen in the lower left-hand corner of the window.

Puccini’s original version of Madama Butterfly premiered at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in 1904. The composer was inspired to write an opera about a tragic love between a young Japanese geisha and an American Navy officer after seeing David Belasco’s play by the same name performed in London in June 1900. Puccini’s score includes many Japanese folk melodies, and is one of his most sweeping and sophisticated. It remains one of the world’s most popular operas.
