Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth
Macbeth, which premiered at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence in 1847, was the first of Verdi’s operas based on Shakespeare. (The other two are his final masterpieces Otello and Falstaff.) The composer was only 33 years old when he decided to set the play—which he called “one of the greatest creations of man”—to music. Today, Macbeth is considered the most important of his early operas.
