Description

Limoges Cat with Phonograph and Record

This charming Limoges porcelain box is handcrafted in the form of a music-loving cat, cranking the handle of an antique phonograph. A tiny, decorative record, sized to fit the turntable brings a touch of whimsy.

Made exclusively for the Met, each one-of-a-kind miniature is hand-painted and edged in 22k gold by skilled artisans.

Like the original Limoges boxes of the 1700s, this one opens to reveal a small compartment for securing small cherished items. Today these treasures are used to mark life’s special occasions or collected as objects of lasting beauty.

History

Music Notes

Most Western music is based on a system of notation that evolved around 1600 out of earlier practices. The starting point for any opera is the full score, which contains all individual voices and instruments arranged in a specific order on the page. The written music—representing the sounds a composer creates in his head—then comes to life performed by singers onstage and played by the orchestra.
