Il barbiere di Siviglia (2 CD)
Conductor: James Levine
Release Date: 05/12/17

Shortly before becoming Music Director of the Metropolitan Opera, James Levine conducted this high-powered performance of Rossini’s most popular comedy. The Met’s charismatic star baritone, Sherrill Milnes, takes the title role and Beverly Sills, America’s favourite prima donna and a bel canto specialist, is Rosina.

Count Almaviva is sung by the ever-stylish Nicola Gedda, Ruggero Raimondi makes a splendidly resonant Don Basilio and, as Dr Bartolo, Renato Capecchi displays his mastery of comic style. There is even a great singer as Berta, the long-suffering maid: Italian mezzo Fedora Barbieri

Its story of two young lovers, an elderly guardian who wants the girl for himself, and Figaro, the resourceful barber of the title make Gioachino Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia (1816) one of opera’s most beloved comedies. At the end of the first act, the leading characters, confused by what’s going on, sing about their feeling of hearing the sound of an anvil being hammered inside their heads—a turn of phrase taken literally in director Bartlett Sher’s hit Met production.
