Gibson Les Paul Guitar Patent Print

This handsome print of a Gibson Les Paul guitar is a unique piece of art based on a patent archived in the United States Patent Office.

To create his work, the artist has used photographic images, legally worded descriptions and his own renderings.

Portrayed here are three patents, which shaped the Gibson Les Paul guitar. The first, by Ted McCarty, CEO of Gibson at he time, is for the fixed bridge and tailpiece, showing the classic shape of the Les Paul. The second, also by Ted McCarty is for the tune-o-matic bridge, which provides perfect intonation during tuning and the third is by Gibson employee, Seth Lover, for the humbucker twin coil pickup, designed to reduce noise.

This piece is part of a collection featuring patents particular to iconic musical instruments, many of which are played by the Met Orchestra.

  • 8” x 10” print
  • The watermark seen in the product image will not appear on the purchased piece.

Music Notes

Most Western music is based on a system of notation that evolved around 1600 out of earlier practices. The starting point for any opera is the full score, which contains all individual voices and instruments arranged in a specific order on the page. The written music—representing the sounds a composer creates in his head—then comes to life performed by singers onstage and played by the orchestra.
