French Horn Patent Print

This delightful print of a French horn is a unique piece of art based on a patent archived in the United States Patent Office.

To create his work, the artist has used photographic images, legally worded descriptions and his own renderings.

This image depicts a 2009 re-creation of a French horn originally made and patented a hundred years earlier in 1909 by a member of the Alexander family in Germany, which has been making brass instruments since 1782.

The patent featured concerns the invention of the first fully constructed double French horn with completely independent F and B flat sides.

This piece is part of a collection featuring patents particular to iconic musical instruments, many of which are played by the Met Orchestra.

  • 8” x 10” print
  • The watermark seen in the product image will not appear on the purchased piece.

History

Music Notes

Most Western music is based on a system of notation that evolved around 1600 out of earlier practices. The starting point for any opera is the full score, which contains all individual voices and instruments arranged in a specific order on the page. The written music—representing the sounds a composer creates in his head—then comes to life performed by singers onstage and played by the orchestra.
