Tenor Jonas Kaufmann is riveting as the title character of Gounod’s Faust in this Met Opera Live in HD production by Tony Award winning stage director Desmond McAnuff that is set in the early 20th Century, with  Faust portrayed as an atomic scientist. René Pape is Méphistophélès, with Marina Poplavskaya in the role of the innocent Marguerite.

”Mr. Kaufmann, a Met superstar… was a handsome, vocally splendid Faust. He sang the pensive and romantic passages with veiled dusky colorings and tender lyricism, and unleashed pent-up power in full-bodied phrases, capped by fearless high notes.” - The New York Times

“The stellar cast was headed by Jonas Kaufmann…. after he sang his Act II show piece; he received not only the traditional mix of bravos and applause, but also hooting and hollering.” - Opera Today

“His [Kaufmann’s] voice is in glorious form, supple, strong and tinged with baritone-like depths. Paired with Kaufmann’s innate musical intelligence, it gives shape and color to every phrase. His Salut! Demeure chaste et pure was inflected with tender lyricism, culminating in a joyous powerful high C.” – The Classical Review

Charles Gounod’s Faust

A sumptuously Romantic adaptation of one of the most enduring myths in Western culture, Faust had its premiere in Paris in 1859. The story of the aging scientist who sells his soul to the devil in return for knowledge and youth has inspired countless versions in many genres, most famously Goethe’s towering drama. Faust opened the first Metropolitan Opera House on Broadway and 39th Street in October 1883 and for many years remained the company’s most frequently performed opera. Des McAnuff’s 2011 production updates the action to the first half of the 20th century, with Faust as a nuclear scientist at the end of World War II who revisits the ill-fated decisions of his youth.
