“Terfel gives a vital, three-dimensional reading as one might expect...the final fugue at a very fast tempo is thrillingly precise, thanks to a team of leading singers who respond brilliantly to Abbado's strong, thoughtful direction...the sensitive detail in [Hampson's] characterization is magnetic. For most collectors this will now be the primary recommendation.” – Penguin Guide

History

Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff

Verdi's final opera, and the third of his stage works to be based on a Shakespeare play, premiered at Milan’s La Scala in 1893, a triumphal success for the almost 80-year-old composer. Baritone Victor Maurel, who sang the title role, reprised his performance in the opera’s U.S. premiere at the Met two years later. In the 2013–14 season, Music Director James Levine conducts a new production directed by Robert Carsen, the first new Met Falstaff since 1964.
