Norwegian director Stefan Herheim delivers a spectacular reinterpretation of Pushkin’s story, with Bo Stovhus and Krassimira Stoyanova leading the cast. Mariss Jansons conducts this performance from the Amsterdam Music Theatre.

“Five Stars ... the direction is precise and has dramatic sweep. Mariss Jansons' conducting is similarly chamber-like in its clarity, yet laden with passion. And the cast rises to the occasion magnificently. Bo Skovhus plays Onegin with incredible physicality and detail. Krassimira Stoyanova is a stunning Tatyana with a sumptuous voice. Andrej Dunaev a plangent Lensky ... essential viewing” - Opera Now Magazine

History

Peter Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin

Tchaikovsky’s most successful opera is based on Alexander Pushkin’s verse novel of the same name, one of the central masterpieces of Russian literature. Subtitled “Lyrical Scenes” by the composer, Eugene Onegin had its premiere in 1879 in Moscow, performed by students of the conservatory. The first full professional production was seen at the Bolshoi Theater two years later. The Met’s 2013–14 season opens with a new staging of Eugene Onegin directed by Deborah Warner and conducted by Valery Gergiev.
