Giuseppe Verdi’s Ernani

Ernani, Verdi’s fifth opera, premiered at Venice’s Teatro La Fenice in 1844. The story is based on a play by Victor Hugo and revolves around a nobleman-turned-bandit who must compete with a wealthy old man and a king as his rivals for the affection of his beloved Elvira. The opera is considered an important step in Verdi’s career—one of his early works that stylistically point forward to his mature masterpieces.
