Rusalka, a water spirit, resides with her family in the pristine waters of the forest lake. When she falls in love with a prince, she sacrifices her voice and departs from her home, hoping to find true love in a new world – a world that does not reciprocate her love. Natalie Abrahami and Ann Yee collaborate to craft a poetic, contemporary staging of Dvorák’s lyrical fairy tale, exploring our complex relationship with the natural world and humanity’s efforts to control and domesticate it. Semyon Bychkov leads an all-star cast, with Asmik Grigorian portraying the titular role.

History

Antonín Dvorák’s Rusalka

Dvorák’s soulful take on the “Little Mermaid” story is a romantic fairy tale full of genuine emotion and lush melodies, including the title character’s enchanting “Song to the Moon.” First seen in Prague in 1901, Rusalka is one of the few Czech operas to hold a permanent place in the international repertoire.
