Double Framed Grand Piano Patent Print

This striking double framed print of a grand piano is a unique piece of art based on a patent archived in the United States Patent Office.

To create his work, the artist has used photographic images, legally worded descriptions and his own renderings.

The period grand piano portrayed here had numerous patents filed by historically famous piano maker, Henry Steinway and his five sons, most of whom were inventors. As a result, many improvements were made to the grand piano.

This piece is part of a collection featuring patents particular to iconic musical instruments, such as the violin, flute and cello — all used to create gorgeous music like that heard at the Met.

Music Notes

Most Western music is based on a system of notation that evolved around 1600 out of earlier practices. The starting point for any opera is the full score, which contains all individual voices and instruments arranged in a specific order on the page. The written music—representing the sounds a composer creates in his head—then comes to life performed by singers onstage and played by the orchestra.
